The fuel efficiency of modern compact SUVs has increased, with advances in technology helping to compensate for their larger size and higher ground clearance, which makes them suited for various terrains.
Contemporary SUV cars are loaded with advanced safety and technology features like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and all-wheel drive, making them safer and more versatile.
The Rise of Mitsubishi Compact SUV Cars
Compact SUVs have seen a surge in popularity recently, with Mitsubishi at the forefront. Offering a competitive price point, Mitsubishi compact SUVs, like the ASX, have carved out a niche in the market, presenting a viable alternative to other small SUVs, including the popular small SUV models from other brands.
Mitsubishi’s best-selling models such as the Eclipse Cross, Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Outlander PHEV provide an appealing alternative to larger SUVs by perfectly blending style, comfort, and functionality. Their popularity stems from their impressive features, including:
5-speed manual transmission
7 airbag system
Daytime running lights
Multi-function steering wheel with cruise control

Not to mention, the spacious cabin that adds a touch of luxury.
Sport Utility Vehicle Fuel Efficiency
It’s noteworthy to discuss the fuel efficiency of contemporary compact SUVs. These vehicles have come a long way, boasting approximately 4.8 to 5.1 L/100km, a considerable improvement from their predecessors. In fact, small SUVs have seen a remarkable 65% increase in fuel economy since 2000.
Although Mitsubishi compact SUV cars consume slightly more fuel at 8.7L/100km, they compensate with their higher ground clearance, making them adaptable to a range of terrains. This makes them a strong competitor for off-roading against brands.
There are several factors that contribute to the fuel efficiency of compact SUVs. These include:
Engine performance
Vehicle weight
Driving habits
Transmission
Aerodynamics
Induction
Rolling resistance
The electronic stability control is also a critical feature that helps maintain fuel efficiency by preventing unnecessary wheel spin.
Spacious Interiors and Cargo Flexibility
The spacious interiors and cargo flexibility are among the most attractive features of SUVs. Mitsubishi compact SUV cars, for instance, offer ample headroom with around 39.5 inches at the front and about 37.3 inches at the rear. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross stands as a perfect example of a compact vehicle that fits the term SUV.
The Mitsubishi design team deserves credit for their exceptional work in optimizing interior space. With 437L of cargo space and rear seats that can be folded forward, the Eclipse Cross facilitates the best utilization of space for passengers and cargo.
When compared to other SUV cars, Mitsubishi Outlander, with its cargo space of 79.9 cubic feet, clearly outshines the competition. And it’s not just about the roomy interiors.
Mitsubishi Compact SUVs are designed with flexible storage spaces, foldable seats, and unibody construction to offer a smoother ride and better handling, making them ideal for managing cargo.
Advanced Safety in Today’s SUV Cars
Besides style and comfort, safety is also a significant focus of contemporary SUVs. Today’s SUVs boast a slew of advanced safety features, including:
Rearview cameras
Forward collision warnings
Automatic emergency braking
Pedestrian detection

Rear cross traffic alerts
These high-tech safety features are paramount for family safety. Technologies like rearview cameras for reversing, lane departure warnings to prevent drifting, and advanced airbags to minimize injuries during a crash, provide an added layer of security for passengers.
Crash test ratings also play an integral role in determining vehicle safety. These ratings, provided by organizations like the IIHS, indicate how well a vehicle can protect its occupants during a crash. Therefore, they serve as a crucial reference point for consumers before making a purchase.
All-Wheel and Four-Wheel Drive Capabilities
The performance and versatility of SUV cars are significantly boosted by all-wheel and four-wheel drive capabilities. Here’s how they work:
All-wheel drive (AWD) continuously powers all the wheels, providing better traction and stability on various road conditions.
Four-wheel drive (4WD) primarily powers the rear wheels, giving the driver the option to engage the front wheels when required, such as in off-road situations.
Unlike 4WD, AWD is completely automatic, allowing for a more seamless driving experience.
Mitsubishi compact SUV cars are equipped with the Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. This all-wheel drive system enhances their performance by offering better grip and control over various road surfaces, thus enabling them to handle different driving conditions effectively.
Four-wheel drive, on the other hand, adds versatility to SUVs by improving traction in difficult driving conditions and enhancing grip on uneven terrain.
